Jawbone will also update its Up app with a new feature called Smart Coach, which gives you personalized recommendations to reach your stated goals. The UP3 won’t measure your active heart rate-during movement and exercises-just yet, but an update is coming that will allow it to do so. Known collectively as bioimpedance sensors the UP3 will track your resting heart rate over time, which can tell you how strong your heart is. Jawbone instead went with skin, respiratory, hydration, and ambient temperature sensors to allow the UP3 to measure your resting heart rate. “Our mission was to create the world’s most powerful activity tracker in the smallest possible design, and we believe we have done that with the UP3 band” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone.Īfter the company realized heart rate sensors was quickly becoming a basic feature in both fitness bands and smartwatches, it wanted to improve on the occasionally inaccurate optical heart rate sensors.
